News and Notes:

A recent outing:

Troop Outing – Sandy Spring Adventure

On November 6th, our troop took on the ropes course at Sandy Spring, MD. Equipped with harnesses and guided by a safety briefing, we climbed, balanced, and zipped through trails of varying difficulty. Around 30 members participated, making it an exciting and challenging experience. Afterward, we camped overnight, enjoying the stunning night sky despite the freezing temperatures. Morning departure was tough in the cold, but the adventure was well worth it!

An upcoming event:

Troop Outing – Anitietam National Battlefield Hike

The Troop will hike the Burnside Bridge Loop (2.5 mi) plus the  Snavely Ford, Connector, and Final Attack Trails (2.9 mi). For those interested, there are opportunities to continue to more trails.

Make a Difference

Scout-age youth experience dramatic physical and emotional growth. Scouting offers them opportunities to channel much of that change into productive endeavors and to find the answers they are seeking for many of their questions.

Outdoor Skills

In the outdoors, youth have opportunities to acquire skills that make them more self-reliant. They can explore canoe and hiking trails and complete challenges they first thought were beyond their ability. There is no greater teacher than the great outdoors.

Timeless Values

Scouting programs instill in youth the values found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scouting helps youth develop academic skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership skills, and citizenship skills that influence their adult lives.

MISSION

Troop 1916 is a traditional scouting troop. We operate according to the BSA established Aims and Methods of Scouting. With over 35 years of scouting history behind us, Troop 1916 is a well-trained member of the Scouting community. We are committed to making a difference in Northern Virginia. Scouts often participate in community service activities such as volunteering time and collecting food for the hungry.

PURPOSE

A goal of Scouts BSA is to help youth develop into honorable adults. Scouting’s values can be incorporated into one’s home or school. Scouts have many opportunities to learn skills of leadership, of the outdoors, and of life. Each Scout decides what they will learn and how quickly they will do it. As a Scout progresses, the value of their achievements will be reinforced through recognition and accomplishments during outdoor adventures.

OUR PLAN

Scouts BSA uses eight fundamental methods to meet a Scout’s hope for fun and adventure, and to achieve Scouting’s aims of encouraging character development, citizenship, and mental and physical fitness. A Scout troop functions best when all eight methods are employed.

Camping is a creative, educational experience in cooperative groups living in the outdoors. It uses the natural surroundings to contribute significantly to physical, mental, spiritual, and social growth.

  1. They'll earn advancement and experience success

  2. They'll unplug from technology

  3. They'll grow more independent

  4. They’ll make new friends

  5. They'll have lots of fun!

Producing service-oriented young men and women

While completing community service projects, Scouts develop real-world skills that will help them succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond. They practice:

  1. Leadership

  2. Problem-solving

  3. Collaboration with others

  4. Time management

  5. Communication

Most importantly, Scouts learn that the work they do can make a real impact in the world.
